What is the difference between an NDIS Support Coordinator and a Specialist Support Coordinator?

Registered NDIS providers offer two levels of support for the participants – Coordination of Support and Specialist Support Coordination. While both roles are pretty similar yet, they differ in a few ways:

NDIS Support Coordinator

Support Coordination is a ‘lower-level’ capacity-building support plan that manages participant support regardless of whether NDIS is plan-managed or self-managed. It mainly helps participants reach their goals and live independently.

NDIS support coordination helps the participants to

  • Connect to support providers and other sources of help, such as the local community, government, or other private assistance.
  • Enhance his skill and confidence in using and navigating the NDIS support system and know he functions well enough.

The Support Coordination has three levels:

Support Connection-

Support connection helps the NDIS participants understand their plan better and enhance their skill sets to implement and manage it effectively without any help. This support is needed for people who can function independently but need occasional help or assistance.

Support Coordination-

A support coordinator helps participants with disabilities achieve the desired goal in various ways. They provide tailored support, assisting participants in managing their daily work, maintaining outdoor work, mingling with society, or living more independently according to their preferences.

Specialist Support Coordination-

A specialist support coordinator is an expert and assists the uniquely supporting NDIS participants in complex situations with their clinical expertise.

NDIS Specialist Support Coordinator

A specialist support coordinator can provide extra and trained support in a more complex situation. They provide consistent support during the best time of using your usual plan and if any challenges you face later. If the participant comes with more complex needs, they provide professional and tailored support through multiple sources and networks of service providers that they have access to.

The Specialist Support Coordinator’s role involves:

  • Supporting you to understand your NDIS plan and how to use your funding without over or under-spending
  • Helping you to identify and connect with service providers who can meet your requirements
  • They ensure that your support remains consistent and ongoing
  • Check for your needs and preferences to ensure that your goals are properly addressed
  • Help you to navigate complex NDIS portals and other systems, such as health and justice, law, justice, if necessary
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance and alter the plan if your needs change over time.
